Sundowning caused by Alzheimer's disease

Some symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, including agitation and wandering, may become worse in the early evening. This is called sundowning. To minimize the effects of sundowning:

  • Turn on lights as evening approaches.
  • Schedule difficult activities, such as bathing, earlier in the day.
  • Reduce the number of activities and distractions for the person.
  • Give the person a single task to focus on.
