Who is affected by benign prostatic hyperplasia

Prostate enlargement (BPH) occurs in 50% of men in their 50s. From 80% to 90% of men over 80 have enlarged prostates.1 BPH symptoms also are age-related. By age 55, 25% of men report symptoms. By age 75, 50% of men complain of a decrease in the force of their urine streams.2

Lower urinary tract problems in men under age 40 are most likely caused by other conditions, such as prostate infection or failure of the smooth bladder muscles to relax during urination (voiding dysfunction).
