Who is affected by bunions

It is not certain how many people have bunions, and their prevalence appears to vary in different populations.1 Bunions can develop at any time and are found in both children and adults.

  • In one study, 1 in every 50 children between 9 and 10 years of age had bunions.1
  • About half of adults are thought to have some signs of bunion deformity.2
  • 10 times as many women as men have bunions.3 This is due in part to the fact that many women wear shoes that have high heels, are too narrow, or both. Men's shoes tend to fit the actual size of their feet more closely.
