Who is affected by thyroid cancer?
Thyroid cancer is not common. It accounts for only about 1% of all new cancers diagnosed in the United States each year.1 In 2003, there were approximately 22,000 cases of thyroid cancer and 1,400 deaths from thyroid cancer in the United States.2
Most cases of thyroid cancer are diagnosed in people who are between the ages of 30 and 50, although it can develop at any age. Thyroid cancer occurs more frequently in women than it does in men.
